I moved to Sydney and one of the first things they put me in this [G] meeting with all these
people and I'm sure that these people aren't around anymore I'm just going to tell the
story anyway it's a true story.
There were Americans and Australians and I just felt so incredibly shy and like I was
completely out of my depth.
I felt like I was getting sold like a jar of [N] Vegemite to another country.
And I remember the American guy saying yep we'll take her they love tits and teeth in
Nashville and [G] the only thing I said in that meeting was um what [Eb] about my songs and he
said we'll fix those [A] and you know what I vowed then and then that Nashville can do it without
me I'll do it right here [F] thank you.
I don't really I don't really mean that as some [Gm] sort of flag waving [C] statement that I'm
true blue Aussie and I'll stay here I just mean that I just know that what I do I'm
a larrikin you know [G] and what I do would just they wouldn't understand me getting out there
and shimmying [Eb] or anything they wouldn't understand and I've really [A] really enjoyed the fact that
I've got around to my whole [N] country and I'm still getting around my whole country and
I wouldn't have it any other way.
So [Bb] um I but I do thank you I do um [F] enjoy going to Nashville I have only on two [G] occasions
but one of them was for a travel company who did a tour called come and see Nashville
with Becky Cole so I thought I better go um but it seemed misleading [D] for me to stay home
[G] and of course I saw some of the most amazing [A] singers that one would ever see in this genre
of country music that I've grown up and loved all of my life but it [C] was the singer that
got up the waitress that [Db] got up and sang this song it was just [Bb] so amazing and [F] after writing
this song and doing a film clip with [A] Duncan Toombs [Ab] we sent her we tracked her down this
time at a [F] different um [A] little place that she was little bar that [Eb] she was working at in
[A] Nashville and I said I don't know if you remember me I'm an Australian who admired your work
she said no and I said blunt blunt she said I remember you [G] and I said I don't mean to
offend you with these [Gb] lyrics but you're an amazing talent and I feel like [G] I feel like
I've got your dream [Gb] and she watched the [N] film clip and she said you made my mama [Bb] cry so
this is the story [G] the very true story and they it's the true stories that work the best
in country music this of the waitress Wendy the [Bb] waitress
In a bar on the east side for [F] wayfaring lonely girls
[Gm] I took a table solo and [Eb] I scanned the other world
[Bb] I sat there drinking bourbon [F]
and trying to belong
[Gm] When somebody at the bar yelled [Eb] let the waitress sing a song
[Bb] Well she pushed her change into her [G] jeans and she sat down a tray
[Gm] She took that corner stage and [Eb] everybody's breath away
[Bb] She sang like it was Sunday [F] and we all got high for free
[Gm] And bless her broken heart [Eb] for laying right there on a slave
[Bb] [Eb] And I suppose I'll hear the [F] angels sing like her someday
[Eb] And the dream she's searching for is [F] just four little words
Wait, let [Bb] the waitress sing
Let [F] that golden voice be heard
Let [Gm] ten thousand more of me sit [Eb] there and hang on every word
[Bb] And let the reason not be money [F] in a world that isn't fair
[Gm] Or let a big shot with a dotted line [Eb] and a million bucks to spare
[Dm] Walk right [Eb] out of that bar with the next [F] big thing
Let the [Bb] waitress sing
[F]
[Gm] [Eb]
Well I ordered songs and bourbon till she had to close the bar
[Gm] And in case she didn't know I said you ought to [Eb] be a star
And I [Bb] tipped from every pocket like a [F] few bucks changed a world
[Gm] And she called my cab and called me crazy [Eb] drunken rambling girl
And [F] my timing could be questioned but I thought about the songs
[Gm] That I made my living on the [Eb] road and that's all I've ever done
[F] She looked at me bewildered as I slurred my last remark I said
[Gm] I should be the one that stays and [Eb] cleans up the door by
[Dm] [Cm] Because a dream is [Eb] still a dream no [F] matter how long it's [G] been true
And a [Eb] girl should count her blessings [F] and wish on someone new
That the way she [Bb] sings
Let [F] that golden voice be heard
Let [Gm] ten thousand more of me sit there and hang on every word
Let [Bb] the reason not be money in [F] a world that isn't fair
Or [Gm] let a big shot with a dotted line [Eb] and a million bucks to spare
[Cm] Walk right out of [Eb] that bar with the next [F] big thing
Let the [Bb] waitress sing
[F]
[Gm] [Eb]
[Cm] Oh I still hear that voice [G] from ten thousand miles away
[Eb] I'm waiting for that big shot to [F] walk in the bar and say
Well let the [Bb] waitress sing
Let that golden voice be heard
Let [Gm] ten thousand more of me sit there [Eb] and hang on every word
Let [Bb] the reason not be money in [F] a world that isn't fair
Or [Gm] let a big shot with a dotted line [Eb] and a million bucks to spare
[Cm] Walk right out of [Eb] that bar with the next [F] big thing
[Gm] Walk right out of that [F] bar with the next big thing
Let the [Bb] waitress sing
[F] [G] [Eb]
All they're doing is saying let [Bb] the waitress sing
[Am] [G] [Gm]
[Eb] [Bb] [Eb]
[Eb] [N]
