[N] Howdy welcome to banjo Ben Clark calm
This is your home for learning how to play the banjo the guitar or the mandolin online.
I'm your silly host
Banjo Ben Clark.
I try to keep it fun around here because it's it's hard to learn when it's not fun
So why not make it fun?
I'm teaching a series on
Beaumont rag a great old fiddle tune sometimes
Often with fiddle players played in the key of F.
Oh doc Watson made it famous in the key of C
Although a lot of times he'll play it with the capo on the second fret
So he played in C position, but out of D now most the time that I've played this song in jams
We've done it in the key of C.
So that's what I'm teaching it in
Like I said this week is mainland week when I'm teaching on banjo and guitar as well
If you're watching this on Facebook here a little while
I'll ask you to go over to the website banjo been Clark comm where you can download the full tab in the PDF and
Tefl formats and over there on the website
I've got a full 20 minute lesson showing you how to play this tune note for note
Not only that but I have another video that where I play the whole thing for you very slowly then I have four different
speeds of guitar rhythm track videos along with the tabs
You can also download an mp3 of just the rhythm where I play bass and guitar
So you can have that to practice along with as well
There's really everything that you need to learn how to play over there.
Not only do I have this song
I have hundreds of songs.
I put a new one up each and every week
All right, so I'd love for you to go over there thousands of you have thank you so much.
Let's go ahead and join
Myself as I teach Beaumont rag
Beaumont rag in the key of C.
What a great and fun tune to play
I'm excited to teach you all this one
First thing I want to let you know is that on the tab there you'll see all the pick stroke directions beneath each one of
The notes so down arrow [F#] would mean a down stroke and an up arrow will be an up stroke
You just need to pay attention to that, especially as we get into the slides
Throughout the song.
There's quite a few slides
[D] The other thing is that I played the song in the performance with a swing fill
Okay, or weighted note and all that means you can hear it.
But what that means essentially is
Well, I'll just play it straight for you first.
You'll hear
[G] but I play it with the swing fill
So [A#] it sounds like more like [D] this
[B] [G] you hear the difference there
Okay.
[N] Now the faster that you play it the more difficult it is to get a swing fill
Okay, so so as you learn it more up to speed
You may or may not be able to retain that we're gonna start out there and with the first a part measure one
We're just gonna walk right up [C] the C scale starting on a C note the third fret and these are all quarter notes
[Em] And then we're just gonna stick really close to the melody on this first time through
So we go to a G chord or so a lot of people play a G7 chord over the second measure
And it's a really simple scale licks just starting on the first fret
[D] Excuse me of the E string.
[C] [G]
[Gm] [F#] So measures one through three are pretty [C] simple
[Gm] [D]
[G]
[G] [Em]
We'll get to four measure four
We're gonna start [D] it out with an eighth note slide
And we're gonna slide with our ring finger from the fifth to seventh fret on the A string.
Okay, and
As I play those open E strings after that
I'm gonna shift back down to grab this fifth fret again with my ring finger and come back down
[A] [G] And that's gonna set [Cm] us up for measure five
Or we're going to just keep coming down the scale
[E] [Em]
All pretty simple stuff when we get to measure six, you'll have to watch it because there is a quarter note stuck in there
The fourth note of the measure is a quarter note.
So the measure six sounds like [D] this
[G] [E]
So you notice I do two up strokes in a row that's because that fifth fret is a quarter note one [G] and two and [D] three and four
And we do the same thing measure seven except we play an extra second fret at the end of that measure
[Gm]
[E] [Am] Pretty straightforward and then we're going to wrap up the first time through this little a part by doing this great little
C scale lick measure eight
[D] [G]
All very straightforward so far get to measure nine same type of thing
[D]
[G] Don't forget that I have a video that I play the whole thing very very slowly all the way through
Here on the website
So if I'm going a little bit too fast for you here
You can watch that video when we get to measure ten, we're gonna play the a part again essentially
Okay, another eight measures, but this time we're going to add just a little bit of difficulty to it
It's mainly going to come in the way of slides and blues notes
