That was the first time that a girl ever rubbed me back
So ladies and gentlemen, please join me all of us here tonight and everybody in the viewing audience

[G] [E]
[Am] Hey, [F] [D]
[E] [A]
[D] [A]
[E] [F] [N]
thank you guys, thank you you know
It's been about 30 years since Brian and I were
Chased out of the music room at Hawthorne High School for singing for a freshman harmonies.
Remember that Brian?
And got a little something to say there
Okay, I'm gonna read something
We want to thank the American Music Awards Committee
And our fans tonight on a summer weekend in 1961 the guys and I got a bright idea
We were going to write a song
My parents were going away and they left this money for food
The minute they were gone.
We took the food money and use it for musical instruments by Sunday night when my folks came home
We were very hungry
But we had written a song called surfing who could have known that 27 years and 52 albums later
We'd be standing before you receiving this very great honor.
We're proud and very grateful
I only wish that my younger brother Dennis could be with us tonight.
We miss him very much
Yeah over the years the Beach Boys have been in style and the Beach Boys have been out of style and they've been in style again
But what's kept me going is the same thing that got me to write surfing all those years ago
I wanted to write joyful music that made other people feel good
Music that helps and heals because I believe that music is God's voice
Once again, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts and we're going to do our best to keep sending out those good vibrations
Love and mercy
Thank the American people
Mr.
