Bass Tutorial // In the River // Jesus Culture chords
Start Jamming...
Hey, my name is Daniel Anellis.
I'm the bass instructor for Worship Artistry.
Today's song is In The River by Jesus Culture off the Let It Echo record.
These are four chords in this whole song.
It's a really, really cool little groove I'm going to show you.
Once you learn the groove and the four chords with a few passing tones,
you can knock this song right out of the park.
There's a couple of diamonds and then there's a section where it goes into a high octave
with the same exact four [E] chords in the same groove.
[B] If you like what you see here during this lesson,
at any time you can click [Abm] on the bottom right hand corner.
There's a logo there.
It'll take you over to your website, to our website,
where we've got the whole lesson there.
You can have loops to practice along to.
We've got tabs that you can learn with and a green room and a bunch of other amazing stuff over there.
I'd love to see you over there.
But in the meantime, enjoy this lesson for free right here on YouTube.
So like I said in the introduction, there's four chords.
We're in the key of [Ab] F [A] and what we're going to be doing is we very [Bb] briefly hit that F at one point
during the passing tone.
Four chords we're going to use is our B flat.
We're going to start in our B flat, down to your G [G] minor,
and then up to your [D] D minor, which is your sixth chord,
and [A] then down to your open A, which is your three chord.
Those are the four chords that we're going to use throughout the song.
[Gb] In the first verse, when the [N] song kicks off, you've got that little hooky little guitar part
and then the bass comes in with the vocal right at the top of the song.
We're going to be playing this groove and it's going to go
See if you can clap it with me.
Before you even start to learn the song, you might want to hit play on that song
and just listen to the groove and see if you can clap along with the groove [D] that's happening.
Once you've got [A] that groove in your head, the rest of it's super simple.
We're going to start.
[Bb] I'm going to show you a simplified version of it first.
This is the groove playing a simplified version.
Starting on the B flat again.
[G] Down to your G minor, [D] up to your D minor, [A] open A.
[Bb]
[G] [D]
[A] [Bb] So it starts with the B flat on the first fret on the A string,
down to the [G] G minor, which is on the third fret on the E string,
[D] up to the D minor, which is on the fifth fret on the A string,
and I'm using my pinky for that one as well,
and to an open [A] E, sorry, an open A,
which is going to be the open A, which is the second string from the top.
That's the groove for the song.
Now I'm going to [G] show you the little finesse part that he throws in,
[A] and it happens in two cycles.
[Bb] The first cycle starts like this.
B flat, and then when you go down to the final note of that bar,
you're going to walk [A] down to your A, and then down to [G] your G minor,
[C] and then you're going to hit your C in the last note of that bar,
and then [D] up to your D,
[F] and then you're going to go to your F for the first time on the third fret on the D string,
and that's the last note of that bar, and [A] then you're going to go to your A.
So looking at that again, we're going to go, starting on your [Bb] B flat,
[G] [D]
[A] that's phase one.
The only difference between the second half of the phrase is that we're not going to go up to the F,
we're going to [Bb] go
[A] [G]
[D] [A]
So when you get to your D minor, you're going to stay on the D minor instead of [F] going up to the F.
[D]
Stay there to your open [A] E, and then down to your open A.
[B]
That phrase [Am] repeats itself right throughout the song until we get to the bridge part.
So practice that for the verse section, and we'll talk about this chorus.
