2016 we're here at the National Quartet Convention and we [G]
are having a great
time this is Pat Barker I'm Matt Fouch and we were [E] actually just having a short
little discussion about bass singing and some tips and go ahead and [G] I thought
this would be a perfect [Ab] video yeah so go ahead and let's just give them a few
little basics [Am] yeah [G] well I've seen you know Paul Harkey give tips and Chris
West gave some great [Bb] tips but [F] yeah I do things a little different so I thought
[E] maybe you'd like to hear about it first [Cm] off I wear the [C] tightest collar [D] possible
[F] and then I get the tie [Gb] really tight [F] up against my Adam's apple and my vocal
cords you can see it there just tight as I can get really if if you have
difficulty breathing you've done it correctly and [B] then what I do is I [C] put my
chin [G] back up against my neck and that allows the tie to get even tighter
and then it gives me that big rich tone that bass singers going for you right
getting your [Abm] neck so [B] okay so is it almost like you're trying yes is to
create a double chin yes as [A] much as possible yes there's some who do it
naturally [B] yeah
[F] see that's really the sound that people are [N] going for a lot of
people say that it comes from here that any makes sense to me all of it should
be coming from here I should see your vocal cords actually flapping okay right
here now does it well I don't actually know this I'm gonna ask does it help if
I like physically try to make my Adam's apple lower like I try to [Abm] push it down
yes [N] sometimes if you watch some of the older videos before I really learned the
technique you can actually see me with the microphone and my finger up against
my Adam's apple if you go way back to like the diplomats then it's like this
and it gets that tone see like that but I've learned to do it without doing that
so it's that's you I think that will help yeah absolutely [B] what [E] sounds like a
big as a [Fm] house yeah big as a house put that in a sub and it's [N] over Wow and do
would you use any special kind of microphone for that no [E] no sometimes I
don't know I'm not only use a mic and it actually people like [B] it better
I don't know well there you go just another take you know a lot of guys talk
about placing it in your [Gb] mask and [G] so for Pat Barker it's a [E] totally different
technique and I hope you've enjoyed these bass singing tips with Pat my pleasure
