Bass Lesson: Using Scales/Key to find licks chords
Start Jamming...
Yo, [A] what's up everybody?
I was sitting here [B] going through some [Fm]
songs and [Bb] I was [N] thinking I could maybe share with you how I [Gm] sometimes go about how [N]
to figure out my licks and some things that I do during the songs.
You know, I've been throwing [G] that little extra [Eb] stuff in there, you know, passages or whatever.
So, [G]
like I said, all I can do is show you what I do.
You [A] know, once again, there are many, [Gm] many different paths [N] in music to get [Gb] [Eb] you the things that you want to do.
But I know a lot of times people always tell you, you know, practice your [B] scales, practice [G] your modes, [F] you know, and you're going every day.
You [Gm] know, all that stuff for [G] hours.
But [Eb] as I figured what you said, [Ab] you know, you can know every [G] scale, you know, every progression and all that stuff.
But if [Eb] you have no idea where to put it, you know, it's not really doing you any good.
[Ebm] [N] So I'm going to, I got my iPod here.
I'm going to start with Lisa [G] McLendon.
Of course, like I said, probably my favorite artist.
[Gb] [G] Well, you can.
[Ebm] And first off, [Eb] the best way to go about figuring out, you know, a lot of stuff, extra stuff you can throw in is knowing the [Gm] song.
The [N] more you know the song, [G] the more intimate you are with the song and the [A] ins and outs and all that, the more you have the freedom to be able [E] to do things.
[B] And, you know, for one, it helps you get lost, you know, [A] and to help you to know the structure and, [N] you know, all that stuff.
[Gm] So since I already know this song very well, it's in the key of E flat minor.
[Eb] OK, so I don't keep it on play it as I go [Db] along.
[Eb] [Fm] [Gbm] [C]
[Ab] [Gm]
[Eb] [G] [C]
[Ab] [G]
[Eb] [F] [Gb] [G]
[Ab] [Bb] I'll [Eb] play around with [F] that key.
[Gb] See [G] what you [Ab] like to do.
[Bb] You know, [Eb]
this [Dm]
[Ab] [Bb]
[Bbm] is the main thing.
Oh, [Ab]
[Bb] [Ebm]
OK.
[Bbm] OK, [Ab] [Bb]
[Ebm] so I got that.
[Bbm] And I know [Ab] the keys are E flat minor.
[Gm] I'll start [Eb] off playing scale.
[Gb] [Bbm] [Db] [Eb] [Bbm]
[Fm] [Eb] [Db] So all that works.
[Eb] So [Bbm] what you can [Eb] do is [Bbm] start messing around [Ebm] with it, doing different [Db] patterns and stuff.
[Eb] And just see what works, what [Bbm] sounds good.
[Ebm]
[Ab] [F] And all that was, was that [Gb] arpeggio.
[Ebm] [Ab]
I do it [Gm] to my vision, you know.
[Bbm]
[Ab] [Bb]
[Ebm] [Bbm]
[Ab] [Bb] Sounds like I kind of did something.
[Ab]
I'll [Bb] [Gb] skip.
[Bbm] [Eb]
[Ab] [Bb] [Eb]
[Gb]
[Ab] [Eb] [Bb] So you can do that and just figure [A] out [Db] some cool stuff.
[Ab] And you're still in the key, you [Bbm] know, you're getting pretty basic, [Eb] you know, instead of going [A] like way out of the [Eb] box, you know, like that [Ab] right now.
[Gm] [Bbm]
[Eb] So [Bbm]
[Ab] [Bb] all that lift, there are a lot of [F] catches [B] you can do.
[Bbm] And just [Ab] part [Eb] of the scale.
This is [Bb] E [Eb] flat.
[Gb] [B]
[Ab] [Bb]
[Ebm] I'm going to skip.
[Db]
[Ab] I'm messing around.
[Gm] I mean, I can do the [Eb] structure.
[Bbm] [F] [Bbm]
[C] [Bb] [Eb] [Gb]
[F] [Gb]
[Fm] [Ebm] [Db]
[Eb] [Bbm] You know.
[Eb] [Bbm]
[Eb]
[Bbm] [Db]
Oh, it's kind of brief.
[Bbm] [Gbm]
[Bbm] It's not really in the [C] key.
[Db]
But [Bb] I know the song, so.
[Db]
[Bb]
[Db] I'm going
[Ab] [Bb]
to skip.
[Bbm]
[Ab] [Bb]
[Bbm]
[F] [Bb]
[Bbm] [Ab]
[Bb]
Scale.
Arpeggio.
[Ebm]
[Ab] [Bb]
[Bbm] [Am]
[Ebm] So, [G] of course, [A] you know, that's a pretty simple song.
[Eb] You want to start out, you know, with not too many [Ab] chord changes or [G] progressions and stuff so you can figure it out.
[Ebm] But actually, once you start doing [N] that and we start learning more songs, the more it'll come faster to you.
So, you know, just keep working at it.
And, you know, trust me, just be encouraged because it'll get better.
The more you work at it, [G] the easier it'll [Gm] get and more challenging stuff.
So I hope that helps you out.
[Abm] As always, God bless.
And I'll try to put up some more [N] stuff that I can share to help the next person.
All right.
