Okay, here's some information on the autoharp and some ideas of the sound of this instrument.
This autoharp is said to be an American instrument, which may be in bluegrass and folk music.
You find a lot, like with the Carter family, for those who have seen that Walt Berlant movie,
or Johnny Cash, John Carter, his wife, playing this.
On YouTube you find plenty of old videos where some members of the Carter family, Sarah Carter or Mabel Carter, are playing such instruments.
It was registered by a guy called Charles Zimmermann in the United States.
As you can hear from the name, Zimmermann is a very German name.
He registered that in 1882, after having visited Germany.
In Germany we have a town called Marknoye Kirchen.
In Marknoye Kirchen you find all those people building instruments ever since.
There was one guy before that called Johann Gutter.
He probably invented that autoharp and showed it [A] to Zimmermann.
He himself [D] registered it as a folk sitter one year later.
But before that he had been providing these instruments to several people for years.
It's like with the Monopoly game.
The one who registered it [G] had stolen the idea as well.
This is very capitalistic anyway, [A] so it fits very good.
[Gm] Some technical aspects [G] on that one.
You have plenty of strings here, which are tuned nearly chromatically.
That means if you just touch them, it sounds very weird.
Not quite like [C] music, just like banging on a piano with all the keys.
But not the ones which belong together.
We have these [Gb] bars on top here.
If you push any of them, [F]
this makes the strings silent, which [Ab] are not supposed to be in the chord.
The chord's names are written on these [D] keys here.
It's an instrument for the [Eb] complete ignoramus.
Anyone can play it.
Just as soon as you push one of [G] these bars, you have a correct chord.
Of course there are different ways to strumming it.
You can just do it like [E] a guitar.
[G]
[C]
[F] [Am]
[E] [Am]
[Gm] [Em] Or, [E] what is very common with bluegrass music, you can use finger picks.
I do this without [C] now.
Yeah?
[G] [C]
[Am]
[Dm]
[E] [Am]
There [N] are probably plenty of people who do this far better than I do.
Yet I'm going to show you that really anyone can do this.
If you want to start learning an instrument and not invest too much practice into it, this one's [E] great.
That's the one you need.
