[Ab] You could be [Fm] happier [Eb] alone
[Bb] [Fm] Happier alone
Happier alone was [Ab] influenced kind [Eb] of by everything that I grew up listening to.
[F] Incubus, Paramore, Whitesnake, Weezer.
[Bb] Like that early [Fm] 2000s pop rock kind of like alt [Eb]-pop that I listened to in 7th grade and 8th grade, [F] 9th grade, [Ab] all the way through high school.
[Eb] That's what's been my focus with writing lately.
[F] Happier alone was actually created [Ab] in this van [Eb] that we're sitting in.
Me and Willie were driving back from a show out [Fm] in the Panhandle I think.
[Eb] We were just going over this riff that he had an idea [Bb] for and it seemed [Fm] like the riff that he had [Eb] fit perfectly with the idea that I was kind of getting [Bbm] around to.
I wanted [Fm] to release it on Valentine's Day [Ab] because I felt like it was the [Eb] perfect time to make [Bb] that declaration.
Like you [Fm] could be happier alone.
[Ab] The idea for the video for happier alone also [F] happened in this van.
A lot of times [Abm] we're joking around with the guys.
[Eb] I'm just brainstorming while [Bb] I'm driving.
It's either [F] Willie or Aaron that I was [Ab] talking to.
We were [Eb] talking about growing up.
[Bb] The idea of a skating [F] rink came up just for [Ab] visiting a skating rink.
And I'm like [Bb] dude we should do the video for [F] happier alone [Ab] in this skating rink.
[Eb] Do the couple skate.
And then it [Bb] kind of was like Valentine's Day [Fm] couple skate.
Everybody kept stacking [Eb] up ideas of just funny couples.
We came [Bb] up with the idea of [Fm] doing it at a skating rink and [Ab] then immediately [Ebm] in my mind I thought [Bb] oh Brenham, Texas.
Like where [F] I grew up in Brenham has a place called Silver Wings [Eb] Ballroom.
We grew up going [Bb] there as kids if you [Fm] grew up in Brenham or anywhere [Eb] around there.
The goal is to have your [Bb] birthday party at Silver Wings Ballroom [Fm] right.
And [Ab] it's been like that for decades.
It was [Bb] like the place to go.
It was the [F] hot spot.
Even some of [Ab] my high school [Eb] teachers, some of my friends [Bb] parents grew up going to Silver Wings.
[Fm] It's like a legendary [Ab] place.
I thought that going home [Bb] would be a perfect [Fm] way to like tie [Eb] all that kind of back together.
Then all [F] the ideas started coming in of who we should use in the video.
It's [Ab] just a long line of [Eb] friends that I went to high [Bb] school with, we grew up with.
There were some of my teachers [Ab] were even in it.
Some of my [Eb] favorite teachers in high school, [Bb] they were actually [F] characters extras in the video.
[Eb] They actually met at Silver Wings Ballroom.
[Bb] So I've heard [Fm] Mr.
and Mrs.
Thibodeau.
They're the ones [Ab] that turn their skate in [Eb] to Willie whenever [Bb] he sniffs it at the very [F] beginning.
The main couple [Ab] that you see, whenever you see the guy [Eb] look at another girl while his [F] wife's right there, that's my [Ab] buddy Keith.
We've been friends since [Bb] 7th grade.
Still are, I just hung out [F] with him last weekend.
I [Eb] thought he'd be perfect for the part of that idea.
Like does [F] it ever cross your mind you could be happy alone?
And I'm like [Eb] looking at something else, [Bb] even though you have something so great and that you've [Eb] loved right in front of you.
Keith [Bb] and Nikki were such great sports about this idea.
Because I'm sure that Nikki was like, [F] what?
You're going to make Keith [Eb] look at another girl for [Bb] multiple takes while she goes [Ab] by?
And it was [Bb] even funnier whenever we got there on site.
Because Nikki was like totally down [Fm] and she already had [C] this thing planned out of like [Eb] how to chew him out.
And I think she just [Bb] absolutely nailed it and did it perfectly.
And the girl [Eb] that kind of goes by, that's Gemma, that's my cousin.
She wanted to be part of it.
And so she came and did an awesome job of just that little [Fm] cameo of her sliding by.
Another couple that was [Ab] in there was Maddie [Eb] Lasagna [Bb] and Greg, her husband.
[F] Maddie and Greg are the [Eb] ones there with their little girl.
And I've been friends with [Bb] Maddie for such [Fm] a long time.
She was [Ab] a cheerleader [Eb] in high school and always like [Bb] super popular.
[F] But probably the friendliest popular girl in school.
Also [Fm] Lindsey, my fiance.
You see her in [Eb] the scene where she's picking out [Bb] a t-shirt.
We took the [F] candy spot [Eb] where you have all the little goodies and stuff, [Bb] the concession stand,
and we replaced it [F] with my merch and we had Lindsey [Ab] pick out a shirt.
The [Eb] band characters [Bb] were kind of the [Fm] first characters that we [Ab] developed in this [Eb] video idea.
Like [Bb] I wanted to be the guy at the [F] door who hated his [Eb] life, that was just stamping people's hands saying,
[Bb] Hey, welcome.
My [F] life fucking sucks, but I'm glad [Ab] you're here.
The guy [Eb] working in the concession stand is [Bbm] our bass player, Jordan.
[F] We thought he had the perfect [Ab] look for the [Eb] concession stand guy.
And it's just such a perfect [Fm] character for him.
Aaron's [Eb] role, our drummer, he's the DJ.
He's [Bb] definitely [F] the class clown in [Ab] the van, right?
And [Eb] he's like the best at [Bb] impressions.
He has the [F] perfect DJ voice.
