That's what this record is man.
I'm attempting to write these love letters to the hood and in [E] every love letter that I wrote I
Really had [F#m] an opportunity to explore
[A] That love and what that like, you know
Kind of camaraderie looks [Dm] like in the [A#] face of tragedy [G] throughout the course [E] of so [Dm] many different songs
[Am] [A#]
[Dm]
[A#] [A#]
Region Park is
Like [E] a tight-knit [D] community, but so large for so many people over 70 languages spoken.
So there's a lot of color.
[Em] It's a vibrant
It's it's like a hood.
Of course, like a [G] classic conventional hood, but it's beautiful because it's open.
I feel like we're welcoming community
The beauty [Cm] of Regent Park
it was a stripped [D] from me like when as I grew [Am] and that was like a dreamland and a graveyard because
[A] It's where every dream and [A#] hope I've ever had [B] was was founded, but it's also where [Dm] everything came to die
when [Am] someone passed away in the community
my [Dm] exposure to like to the violence of what it means to be from a community like that to state violence to
[Am] All of these are kind of systemic barriers.
I started to realize why some people succumbed to the system of
[Dm]
Being from a community like that
[A#] [D]
[Dm]
[A] [A#]
[D] [Dm]
[F] [Am] I
Used to get [A#] anxious to the point where it debilitated me when I couldn't express [B] myself
It began with my my family's inability to [C#m] understand why I was I was doing what I was doing in class why I was unfocused
[E] my sister realized that the [C#m] punishments that I was receiving they weren't [A] resulting in anything and
Instead of having me write lines.
She was just forcing me to write poetry
[F#] And so I was communicating that and then I realized it's like the depth of emotion had space
[B] You know to move in poetry and that's what [E] was so beautiful about it
And so the gift [F#m] of that it's kind of the beginning of the rest of my life
[A] But why do people have to [A] live in fear?
Why do people have to assume that death is near and are you guys finally starting to hear?
Don't let me be this single rose in this run-down park
[E] The same time I [A] remember listening to Joni Mitchell
It was just her delivering truths, you know, [F#] and it wasn't ever like in a conventional way
That's all that I ever wanted to do was just to [Dm] reach people by way of [G] like a lyric that was pointed
[E]
[G#m]
You [F#] know, you know
[C#] It's over
[E] I
Think of the time [D#] that I was making the record
There [G#m] was something about the feeling of folk music that I [D#] wanted
It was a feeling that like I was deprived of you know that I was searching for because it wasn't present for me
[E] [B]
[G#m] [F#]
[C#]
[C#] [B]
[G#m] I'll just so afraid writing these songs.
[F#] Did I make a song or did I make a memory of someone?
When I [C#] I played Ali for like his [D] protector his first cousin man.
I just remember how like
Difficult it was to play him the song Honey
[E]
You know
[F#m]
[D]
[E]
[F#m]
[D] With the presence of Ali was like definitely
[E] There for me [A] in that moment and yeah, it was just [Em] we kind of sat in that silence [D] for a bit sitting in the first
experience of [F#] Mourning
that that I had [F] with him outside of [A#] rage and outside of [Bm] who did it and outside of
[G] Crisis response meetings and outside [Dm] of how the body's being buried as I discussed the logistics of death more than I discussed what death
Meant to me at all.
[E] I realized the power [F#m] of Ali in that moment.
[E] He was just like man
He's like you took me [A] there.
He's like there wasn't a one moment of it.
That was not
Truthful, you know because I [F#m] tried to be honest to [E] make the pathway between me and the story [G#] and this emotion
Be completely clear
