Back in the 60s, Simon [Bb] and Garfunkel topped the charts with hits like
The Sounds of Silence and Mrs.
Robinson.
After Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel parted company back in 70,
Art went on to, among other things, the big screen.
Movies such as Carnal Knowledge and Catch-22.
Since then, Art Garfunkel has also done a lot of concert tours,
had solo albums, proving that his voice, which is certainly unique,
and through creating [Gb] a nostalgic music for millions of fans today,
is still very [F] much with us and very much to be enjoyed.
Art Garfunkel is here this morning with us.
Good to have you.
Pleasure.
Pleasure to be here.
Well, tell me about this long and winding road.
Let's take somebody else's song title.
You've been out there making a lot of music for a lot of years,
and it's evolved, hasn't it?
Well, when Simon and Garfunkel split up, I went to Jimmy Webb
before I went anywhere, because Jimmy's such a genius of a writer.
Yeah, before we go any further, the man behind me,
who I would have introduced myself, but [N] Art's going to do it for me,
Jimmy Webb, the great Jimmy Webb, who has written a lot of the music on your new CD.
He wrote this song, Skyrider, I'm about to do, and it's autobiographical.
It is my somewhat reclusive life of the 80s in song.
I'm kind of over it now.
Well, tell me about that.
Why the reclusive 80s for you?
Oh, I had a tough time back in the early 80s,
and I sort of pulled back in, went very literary, began to write poetry,
and made a tour de force of an album called The Animal's Christmas that Jimmy wrote.
When you go in a recording studio now, and you're putting a song out,
does it have to be something that you can relate to from your life experiences
for you to really sell it?
As you mature in life, do you want songs that really speak to your own truth?
Yes.
I'm a bit of an actor as a singer,
and as an actor you have to feel that the sentiments you're talking about come from the inside.
Otherwise, it won't fly on mic.
You balk when there's anything not truly intelligent and not truly real.
The name of the song that you're going to do first now?
Skyrider.
Skyrider, written by Art Garfunkel and Jimmy Webb.
Written by Jimmy Webb.
Oh, sorry.
Okay.
From your new record.
Indeed, the new [Dm] CD.
I'm tired of tracing vapor trail [C] ghost letters [F] in the sky
[C] [Dm] Living life [G] in [F] daydreams, [C] watching precious [F] time [Am] get [C] by

Safe with my [D] wires and [Bm] wings
How could I [Em] ever fall?
