Hi guys Ken Mercer here in this video today.
I'm going to be showing you how to play the gallop section of Hank Marvin's tune Apache I
Noticed some of you struggle with that section particularly beginners, so I'm going to zoom in with the camera onto my fretboard
I'm going to show you the timing I'm going to show you the pick strokes, and how it works
So hopefully with a bit of practice you will be able to play that section confidently and have fun with it
Okay, so the way we're going to play this
We use our middle finger on the third fret of the a string and our ring finger on
the third fret of the D string and
These fingers stay down on here
For most of the gallop section and we're going to play it like [F] this
[E] Now [A] that very last part there [E] we play the second fret and then an open [A] a string
We're [G] not concentrating so much on this today because it's very simple, okay?
I just wanted to point out where the notes were so so the main section
We're just practicing with our two fingers there
And they don't really move on the third fret on the a string and on the D string
What we will concentrate on is the picking hand
I'll play through it full speed
[A]
And this is what it looks and sounds like
remember the palm of your hand is
resting on the bridge and
This side of your hand here is just touching the tops of these strings, so you get a muted sound
rather than a full sound Okay
[G]
And we're going to play this
[F] Okay,
[A]
[F]
[E] [A] [D]
[E] now.
I played really slowly so you can hear the rhythm
Okay, [C] [F]
[Bb] [C]
[F] [G]
[C] [F]
[C] [F]
[G] [E]
[A]
[D] what I'm playing there.
I'm playing the a string as a downstroke
[C] Then I move to the D string
[F] down up down then I play
[E] down up
That's one section.
We need to play this part four times
so [C] we have
That's [Bb]
[C] one section
That's [Fm] [C] two [F] three
four [E]
and then we finish with
[A] down [D] down and
[C] then we'll have
[F] Just
[A] [F]
[A] [D]
play this very very slowly in the beginning if you find it difficult
[C] It's better that you aim for accuracy more than speed so even if you play it really really slowly like
[F] It's [C]
[F]
okay to play it slow like that because you're learning to play precisely you are learning to
control your pick and
The speed will come with practice, so just persevere with it and within a very short time
You'll see some good results
