I'm Anna Calvey and the song I'm going to do today is Blackout.
_ When I write songs I like the music to tell the story as much as the lyrics do,
so when I was writing it I really wanted to create a feeling of danger and exhilaration.
In the intro I wanted it to sound as if you're alone in a house
and suddenly the lights start flicking on and off.
_ I created this by just having a sense that you can't tell what key the song is in.
It's going [Cm] _
[Am] between these two [Cm] chords, you don't know where it's going to [Ab] go
and then you're starting to feel like you're coming [Eb] home and then you land on the key.
At that point the drums come in and it's as if this moment has begun
where the lights are off and you're in this world for the space of the song.
Everything that happens in the song musically is telling [Gb] the story, all the different sections.
_ As the song finishes it's as if that moment has finished. _ _ _
That's just what I find exciting in music.
I like to feel that there's a sense of tension and release
and in this song there's a build-up of tension just before the chorus
and then it's released in the chorus.
