My songwriting approach for Mountains of Sorrow,
Rivers of Song, is [G#]
kind of the [C#] same as it's always been,
which is, I wait.
[B] Up on Main Street
I guess my first [C#] couple records I wrote
more on the road or more like kind [G#m] of bouncing [G#] around,
but [F#] now that it's kind of my job,
I can put aside [B] a year and just write.
Down [F#] on Friday
[G#m] People ask me
[B] Why I think so hard
Nashville's a great town to record in.
I mean, there's like a good place to eat,
good [F#] studios, good musicians.
I think it was just kind of nice for [G#m] us to get
out of the town [D#m] that we live in
and [B] into a different scene of musicians
[F#] to just draw different inspiration [B] from.
I felt like my touring band really grew a lot
[F#] on that last tour,
[D#m] and [B] doing the live sessions for the artist's den
[F#] and then re-watching that, I kind of felt like
they [G#m] were really ready to be a big part of this record,
and I wanted to [E] give them the opportunity
to grow even more from that last tour [B] we did.
[G] The vision that [N] Jay and I both had for this record
was to record it live.
You know, I got this new place, and I just thought
it would be great to [F#] find somebody
who can [C] really deliver [F#] good live [E] performances
and [F] to kind of fill this church up
and baptize it with some [G] good vibe.
That's kind of what a studio should be,
just a nice place to make music.
It's not about what you did before,
it's about what you're doing right now.
I [F] want you to be a [C] truth
[F] Truth is
[G]
I'm the one [C] true
That was kind of the thing I [A#] think
about a lot of these recordings
[F] were some things just fell together like a [D#] dresser drawer.
Just a beautiful, beautiful country song, really.
There's countries you can [F] get, very honest.
But [A#]
yeah, [Fm] I think that turned out [Cm] to be my favorite song.
We knew we had something good [D#] when it went down.
Coffee [F] spills and unpaid bills
And all my [D]
dust at the [A#] restaurant
Everyone who played and guested on this record
wanted to be there.
Nothing was arranged by [F] record companies or managers.
It was very [G#] organic and just purely respect for one another.
Alison Krauss, [C#] I've been a fan of hers forever,
just a magical singer.
[F#]
[B]
You [F#] got a new life
[B] [F#]
Mountains of Sorrow was just a great track
that [B] we just felt was missing just something.
I mean, I've been listening to Patty Griffin for a [G] long time.
I knew that Jay had worked with her before
and that her piano [Bm] was in that studio,
so I just [G] figured I'd ask Jay, I'd [F] say hey man,
if you know, [G] Patty would be into singing on this,
that'd be great.
So we sent [D] Patty a mix [G] of Mountains of [D] Sorrow
and of course, she sent back [Bm] The Shiz.
It was [A] just magical.
I think she brought this song to a whole other level,
which is what I thought she would [Bm] do.
So it was pretty cool, it was kind of like
the [A] Sam Beam thing from the last record.
It's just, you know, you bring [B] people in
who you trust and [D] admire and just let them do what they do.
To the mountains of [A] sorrow and the rivers [D] of sorrow
Oh, these mountains of sorrow [A] and these rivers of [D] sorrow
[G#] They're masters of their craft.
There are people that I look up to as a musician and go,
that's the kind of focus and the kind of energy
that I want to [C#m] put into the stuff I do,
[F#] but I'm probably too scattered to really get there,
but they're an inspiration to me.
Oh, the streams everywhere I see
That's the thing I think about the whole record
is I feel it's the most balanced album.
A lot of that [C#] is owed to [G#] the songs, but then a lot of that
is also owed [F#] to the people in the room with me.
And you know, I can't say enough good stuff about the band
and how much good work they put in,
and Jay and Jason and everybody [B] in his crew, they all,
[D#m] everybody was just really [C#] together on it.
I felt like everybody put good [B] energy into making the music.
