I decided to call this percussion instrument a travelette.
And in my research, I found that there was a device used in theater
where the actors were on stage and they wanted to get their attention for something,
a cue for whatever reason, and they had this square wooden block
that was hit with a mallet, and it was called a travelette.
So I decided to call this, even though it's not a square piece of wood,
but it is a small block and you do hit it with a mallet,
and so I call it a travelette.
Now, as you can see, there's a guiro on here,
as well as hitting the wooden drum head with the felt-tip mallet.
The other playing technique for the travelette would be to take the middle finger,
which is over the sound portal, and you bring it up and hit it.
So it's actually not only just a note, but it's going to be part of your rhythm as well.

Another thing that you can do with the travelette is you can vary the pitch
by moving the rest of the fingers over the sound portal while you're playing.

The travelette comes in different sizes, and as you can see, different wood.
And this is one that's a lot larger and therefore has a deeper tone,
but it's played identically to the mid-sized one.
