Well, if you are a fan of good music in general, Irish music in particular, then I really need
not introduce our next band, but I'll do that anyway.
Alton is here with us today.
Of course, the Irish singing group.
And Maread is the founder of the group, along with your late husband, back in the 80s.
Welcome to Washington, D.C.
We love being here.
Thank you very much.
You're in the middle of a U.S. tour.
We are.
You do this quite often, I'm sure.
The last 25 years, we've been here nearly every year.
We always enjoy coming here, and we've made loads of friends over the years.
Of course, you have a lot of Irish people living in the U.S.,. so we always meet up with them, and it's always a joy. We'd love to meet the band. Now, we know one member, Mark Kelly, isn't with us. He does the European days. Yes, that's right. But would you introduce the band to us? Over here on guitar, we have the High Sprawl from Derry and Minneapolis. He lives in Minneapolis. Then we have Dermot Byrne from County Donegal on accordion. Here, I have Ciarán Turrish on fiddle and Ciarán Cairn on bouzouki. Bouzouki? Yes. I don't think that I've ever seen a bouzouki before. I'm interested in hearing the song. This might be a hard question, but how would you categorize Irish music? If you had to say what you feel when you hear it, what would you say? It's joyous, and it does do the whole spectrum of people's emotions. I think that's why we're able to travel with it, because people are usually able to associate with it or feel something in common with it. Good soul music, if you will. Yes, that's what I hope. I love that. All right, and what are you going to do for us today? We're going to sing an immigration song that my father wrote many, many years ago, and it's called Gleantan Lás Gwydor in Gaelic, which is the area that I'm from, and it means the green fields of Gwydor. Beautiful. This is Alton. Thanks for being here. Thanks, Alice. [G] [D]
