[A] This, My Inheritance, was a song [D] inspired by the life of St.
Peter, or as we more commonly
[A] know him, Peter.
He was one of the disciples [D] of Jesus and went on to be the rock of the church.
[A] He spent a lot of time in Rome, and so at the very end of our trip, [D] we found ourselves
in the middle [E] of the Vatican City, [G#m] standing in the middle of the road.
[F#m] We didn't [D] even know at the time, but [A] apparently the Pope was addressing the press, the world,
whatever that night.
So we're standing in the [D] middle of the road there.
They have all these [A] barricades everywhere, [E] and we're not even sure that [F#m] we're going to
be able to spend much time there.
[D] We had been walking around Rome all day.
[A] We were all just sweaty [D] and hot.
It was kind of fun to end [F#m] with a guy who spent [E] a lot of his time with Jesus.
[D] [F#m] We've been studying all these people up to this [E] point who have been really pillars in
the faith, but this was a [D] guy who Jesus himself said would lead the church.
[F#m]
When we came [E] back from Europe and we started [D] writing these songs for [F#m] this album, St.
[E] Peter
was one of the songs we had left to write toward the end of [A] writing.
We said, man, we've got this whole book [D] of this guy's writing, so let's just [A] start there.
[E] There's this [F#m] beautiful verse in 1 Peter [D] 1, starting in verse 3,
[A] Praise be to the God and [D] Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
In His great mercy He [A] has given us new birth into a [E] living hope.
Through the [A] resurrection of Jesus Christ from the [F#m] dead and into an [E] inheritance that can
never perish, spoil, [D] or fade.
And we thought, could it be really cool if we [F#m] just wrote this song straight from [E] scripture
to take words [D] from Peter himself and [A] put them to music?
And that is [E] This My Inheritance.
