Hi everybody and welcome to the tone lab brought to you by tone specific guitar pickups
I am Jay Leonard Jay and today I'm gonna help you nail that Albert Collins tone

[C] remember back when I was like a little awkward boy in high school
I had this big crush on a girl and I really really wanted to get her attention
But she really wasn't that interested but finally after months of trying
I finally was able to take her out on a date and her parents were out of town.
It was perfect
I was at her like den and we were watching some TV
We're having our conversation and in the middle of this conversation.
I heard this sound
It was this guitar tone that I've never heard before it was stinging
It was bright yet full and spiky and in your face and had this attitude and it was out of control
Before you know it I stopped paying attention to the girl and I was completely
absorbed into the TV and that tone in that sound and that guy on the TV was Albert Collins that guitar was a
Telecaster and that's what got me on the road to becoming primarily a telecaster player long story short
The girl thing didn't really work out
But buddy, I ended up getting a way way deeper love and something that has really paid itself back a million times over
So to pay tribute to one of my favorite all-time guitar players
I'm gonna show you how to get that really classic Albert Collins tone.
Alright, so let's get going
[Bb] [C]
[Fm] When [Cm]
[F] it comes to the guitar we gotta go telecaster
I got one right over here
This has the maple neck and the ash body just like he would have used but you will see
There is a little bit of a [Ebm] difference.
I have the Bigsby on this guitar
He definitely does not have a Bigsby on his but I really really like Bigsby
So I hope he forgives me for my break of tradition.
In fact, [Ab] Albert had a really cool bridge plate situation
He didn't use the three barrel bridge
he used the six saddle bridge which kind of took away from the sustain add to the snap and
Also, he kept the ashtray cover on which that mixed with like the magnetic bridge plate really changes the characteristic of the the pickup
In a really really unique way.
So if you have that set up on your guitar, I would recommend giving it a shot
You might really dig the results
[F] [Cm]
[C]
Well, mr.
Collins used a quad reverb for his tone, which is [E] just absolute suicide for the ears
It is like a twin reverb with 412 speakers essentially, and I don't have one.
I don't know anyone that has one
So what I decided to use today was a twin reverb and I have it stacked into the speaker cabinet of another twin reverb
Make sure if you're gonna do that though that you have an output [N] transformer with multi tap
So it could handle the impedance change or just stick with the twin reverb.
Trust me
You're not gonna need that extra volume.
It is so much.
In fact, it is in a completely different room
I don't want to be in a room with that amp
We're gonna let it just sizzle over there and I'll deal with the sound through my tiny little monitor
In terms of settings, I'm just cranking it.
I got the master on 10
I got the travel and the mids on 10 and the bass on For the bright switch don't even worry about it when your master volume is that loud that bright [Cm] cap ain't doing nothing [Am] [C] [Eb] [C]
Moving back to the guitar. We got a tune our guitar a little bit different The way he tunes it [Eb] is as if someone's always [G] playing an F minor [F] bar chord on the guitar at all times So he moves this E string all the way up to an F Turns the a string [C] all the way to a C [Db] This [F] becomes an F you got [Ab] a G sharp [C] a C [Fm] and another F [Db] And when you [Fm] play it F minor chord Very [F]
very nice. The Iceman only uses one pickup position on the Tully and that is the bridge pickup and for that choice I decided to go with the tone specific country pickup and I bet one of you are Probably wondering why am I going with the country pickup instead of the blues pickup? [Gm] Well, the country has a snap and a sizzle it has a twang to it that lends itself really well to Albert Collins's style He gets a capo puts it up on the seventh fret even to make it tighter to make it [Cm] brighter to make it more stinging And [Eb] [F] [Eb] [C]
we're pretty [Ab] much 90% there This is where I was for a long time still wondering why I can't get that Extra little bit of Albert Collins out of my tone Well after I got rid of the pick that helped a little bit But the big secret to getting that bright tone without it really hurting as much as a long long Cable use like a 100 foot [F] cable It adds a load to your incoming signal which kind of takes away the high end and gives it this little weird Phasiness to the tone which is that sound that we're all looking for that that thing where it's bright without being bright You'll lose a little bit of volume, but you'll gain a lot of cool funkiness to it. I'll show you the difference This is the guitar with like 20 feet. [Cm] [F] [E] [A] [C]
[Cm] This is with the 100 feet of cable [Am] [Cm] And [B] [Cm] [Fm] [Am] [Eb]

He might change your life. Just like he changed mine That being said I'll see you guys [Em] all soon. Take care and goodbye [N]
