[Bb] [C] Greetings friends, how are you?
This is Adam Rafferty and I'm going to give you a little
lesson here on how to approach the groove and I'm going [D] to show you how to play it,
the groove on Stevie Wonder's Superstition.
[Bb] I put a video up about a year ago and I've
gotten a million, well not a million, I've [N] gotten several emails from you and I'm delighted
that so many people enjoyed it and I've gotten a lot of requests for tablature.
So I finally
finished the tablature for it and there will either be an address here on the screen or
somewhere as to where you [D] can download the tablature from.
But I wanted to show you one
of the trickier spots and I realized video was a much better medium than tablature alone.
So I'm going to show you how I approach it and it's [Bb]
similar but different from the way
some other people approach it and if I break it [Eb] down for you I think it will make it easier
to play it and have a lot of fun.
So first thing is, [E] I'm playing the bass line actually
a little differently from the original Stevie Wonder recording because I'm trying to sort
of mimic the sound of a whole band so I had to decide what to leave out and the original
bass line is just four on the floor.
See?
And I realized I wasn't getting the feel that
I wanted overall from that.
So here's what I'm doing, here's the bass and drums part.
It's very simple.
One, two, three, [Gb]
four.
That's it for each measure.
And in case you're not sure what I'm doing, I'm wearing a thumb pick and I'm just landing
the flat part of the thumb pick on the low E string.
Okay?
And it's kind of hitting the string
and the string's kind of hitting the fret so I'm getting this [E]
sound and it's very relaxed.
I'm just
putting my hand back into a playing position.
I'm not bashing, I'm just putting it back down
the way a drummer closes a hi-hat and the sound comes out.
Okay?
Okay.
That's my click.
Got it?
Okay, now over here, left hand.
I am barring my first finger and there's more than
one way to do this so you might want to experiment.
I'm barring my first finger on the fourth and
fifth strings, second fret.
It's like the notes of any minor chord.
But [D] there's a reason I'm
barring it.
So with thumb, index, middle, I'm [E]
going
Right?
That's the first three notes.
It's going to go
Now the next note, here's where the little magical thing has to happen.
You got to [D] go
Hear that?
So we need to hear the note D and we need to have a click at the
same time.
And this is where I probably racked my brain for about six months.
It's very hard
to pluck and [E] do that sound at the
I was trying to do it
To pluck a D and to get the drum sound
at the same time.
And you need both.
It then occurred to me, hey, I need to make the [Eb] D happen
with this hand and make the drum sound happen with this [D] hand.
So I figured, why not do a hammer
on?
See?
Watch.
If I just hammer a D on, I'm playing the fifth string, fifth fret.
[Ab] Ah, it's [D] that.
