[Em] [A]
[D] El Paso
Classic if ever there was one recorded [Em] in 1959 with Marty Robbins on vocals [D] and Grady Martin on lead guitar
A few years ago.
I recorded an instrumental version of it for my CD guitar party
And I thought a few of you might like to learn some of those guitar licks that I stole from the original version
Starting with that intro here.
We go in D
[G]
E minor
[G] But don't do what I did don't play that G there
Play it up there
[E] That way while you're playing the open E string your hands already moving up and getting that [D] G there
[Em]
[Bm]
[D]
One thing about [Abm] intros they can be very handy if you're a vocalist who?
Plays an instrument and sings you you can play the intro
Concentrate on that
Then you can go into your vocal and don't worry so much about playing any more lead right through
[Am] But for those of you who [G] want a few more licks it'll give it that Mexican flavor
Here's a couple of those
Out in the West Texas town of El Paso.
I fell in love with a Mexican girl
[A]
[G] Nighttime would find me in Rose's Cantina
[B]
[E] Music would play and Felina would whirl
[Db] [B] All right now here's one of my real favorite parts of the whole song this is in the original version
This comes just after Marty Robbins sings the line about [Eb] the handsome young [D] stranger lay dead on the floor
so
D
So you're hitting that D there?
Bending that G sharp up to an A
[A] Let it go
[G] G natural [D] F sharp
Sounds pretty good on its own, but when you hear it with the chords of the song sounds terrific
[D] [E] [A]
[E] [D]
[E] Hey, I just got to play that [D] one more time
[Em] [A]
[D] [N]
