What's going on everybody?
Welcome to another edition of Axe Creation.
And on this week's lesson we're going to look at the intro to the song Temptus off the new Tool album.
Now this song is probably one of the more heavier, the aggressive song.
It's the only aggressive song on the album.
You know, Adam Jones really lets loose on this song a lot.
It's a 15 minute song.
There's a lot of guitar playing.
There's a lot of guitar soloing for Jones on this track.
So it's going to be really fun to delve into.
If you guys haven't checked it out, please do.
It's an awesome song.
We're going to dive through.
So we're going to talk about the beginning of the song and that bad ass riff that he
plays in the intro.
Okay?
So down in the description below you can find a link for the tabs for this.
And here we go.
We're going to drop detuning.
And we're going to start off.
It's kind of an odd time riff and it's a repeating pattern riff.
So that kind of makes it easier to digest the riff itself.
And think of it as 5, 5, 5, 6.
Okay?
And again, I don't quite know where Jones is playing this riff.
[D] He could be playing it here in fifth position or he could be playing it here in ninth position.
Okay?
[E] Play it where you can get it to sound the best for you.
For this lesson I'm just going to play it here in fifth position.
Okay?
So again, like I said, it's 5, 5, 5, 6.
And let's think about it that way.
Okay?
So the first three notes are going to be this E note here on the second string.
[D] Seven on the G.
Seven on the D.
[A] [E] Now this E on the recording, it sounds like it rings
out for a good [Am] amount of time.
[D] [E] But if I play it with the open E string, that note just starts pinging.
And I just, I can't do it.
So it's 7, [D] 5, [Am] 5, 5, 7.
There's your 5.
1, 2, 3, 4, 5.
Okay?
Same pattern except we're going to change the last note.
Rather than 7 on the D string, it's 7 on the G [D] string.
[Am]
[D] Right there.
[E] So it's [D] 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.
Okay?
So there's our second 5.
The third 5 is the same as the first.
[Am] Whoa.
Now here comes our 6.
Same as the second with an added D string seventh [D] fret.
[A] Like that.
So the whole thing.
5, [E] 5, 5, 6.
[D]
[Am]
[D] There you go.
There's the intro to Temptist.
I think that's how you say that in the song.
Right?
It's just supposed to be a play off of 7 but it's [E] still a T.
I don't know.
[Am]
[D] Alright?
So there's the main [E] idea.
You keep that going for a long time.
The drums start hitting cymbals on a slow count.
And then as soon as the cymbals start playing the quick notes, the 16th notes or the high
tempo eighth notes, whatever you want to call it, that's when you're going to switch, the
guitar is going to switch to a lower tempo.
[D] [Am] [D] [Am] [D]
And you're basically going to pick out those same notes.
5, 7, [Am] 7, 5, 7.
[D] 5, 7, [Am] 7, 5, [D] 7.
The [E] higher 7.
Okay?
And it's a pattern of 4 again [Em] just like always.
[D]
[Am] [D] [Am] [D]
[Am] [D] [A]
Okay?
So just like the faster pattern, the slower pattern has that extra note on the D string there.
And I believe you do that twice through.
So [D] [Am]
[D] [Am] [D] [Am]
[D] [C] [D] [G#] [D]
[Am] [D] [F] [Em] [D]
[Am] [D] [Am] [D]
[Am] [D]
[A] coming out of it you do the original pattern once.
Here's where Jonesy gets tricky.
Right?
After you do that original pattern once, the 5, 5, 5, 6, you're going to switch the [Am] pattern
to just 5.
Straight 5's.
Okay?
And [D] that.
Those two with the lower note and the higher note.
Think of when you play both of them, like think of that's once.
Okay?
And you do that 4 times.
[Am] One, two, three, four.
[D] And then the second time you [Am]
[D] [G#] add two [C] more notes [A] to it.
[D] 7 and 7.
So [Am] like [D] that.
And then you bring back the [E] slow pattern, [D] [Am] [Dm] [Am] [D]
but [Am] it's the same tempo that you've been playing
the entire time.
[D]
Like that.
Okay?
And you do it [Am] twice.
[D]
And there is the intro to Temptist.
And then you get that badass riff that comes in.
[Dm] [C]
[C#] [D] [Dm] [C] [D#]
[Dm]
Right?
And that's as far as I got, guys.
So that riff, it starts out where you hit it twice on the, right?
[C] [C#m]
[B] But you only do that on the very first time you play it.
So [D] it's 12.
[F] And then open and then 10 to [D] 15.
And then 0, 10, 12.
Repeat the [F] slide.
[D]
[C] [C#]
And then [Dm] 10, 10, 11.
You're approaching the octave, the 12, from the half step below.
And then on the repeat, you approach it from a half step above.
[C]
[C#] [Dm]
[C] [D#] [D] Like that.
[N] Okay?
And there you guys go.
The intro to Temptist.
Badass song.
It's the banger of the album.
It's the only one.
But Jones lets it rip and it's awesome to hear if you're a fan of his playing.
Alright?

So that riff, it starts out where you hit it twice on the, _ right?
_ [C] _ _ [C#m] _
[B] But you only do that on the very first time you play it.
So [D] it's 12.
_ [F] _ And then open and then 10 to [D] 15.
_ _ _ And then 0, 10, 12. _ _ _ _
Repeat the [F] slide.
_ _ _ [D] _ _
_ _ _ _ _ [C] _ _ [C#]
And then [Dm] 10, 10, 11.
You're approaching the octave, the 12, from the half step below.
And then on the repeat, you approach it from a half step above.
_ _ _ _ _ _ [C] _
_ [C#] _ [Dm] _ _ _ _ _ _
[C] _ [D#] _ _ [D] _ Like that.
[N] Okay?
And there you guys go.

It's the banger of the album.
It's the only one.
But Jones lets it rip and it's awesome to hear if you're a fan of his playing.
