I found a little bit of information about Grantham.
Apparently a lot of young men did their national service in the Air Force there.
And so he wrote this little song.
Apparently, on a Saturday night, they used to go down into the town of Grantham
to seek a little bit of female companionship.
And the young ladies of Grantham got themselves well organized.
Apparently down the high street,
on the one side of the high street, they used to charge half a crown for their favours.
Twelve and a half p for anybody that's, you know.
And but on the posh side of the high street, they used to charge five bobs.
So that, you know.
They still do.
It's not as good as it sounds because they're still the same ladies.
Apparently, apparently on the town hall steps,
there was a bargain basement of a tanner.
But I'm not quite sure what you got for your sixpence.
We'll tell you that.
I've done a little bit of research into this sort of thing.
For [N] sixpence, you could watch your mate.
It's not a lot if it takes his time.
So [G] anyway, he wrote this little song called the five bob sign.
And everybody, [F#] we've been a bit too serious this [D] weekend.
So we thought we'd do [G] this for you.
It's called the five bob sign of the street.
And it's got a great little [N] chorus that goes,
[C]
[F]
[C]
[F] [G]
[C] I'm in em and bold, scarce [E] to empty and the [F] day.
And I left me [C] home abroad to roam, life to [G] make me way.
[C] And there's never been a girl [D] with whom I have [F] laid down.
So I'll buy a [C] kiss from a fine young [G] miss when I get [C] into town.
And [G] I'm walking up and down the streets of the town.
[C] Ladies [F] and girls, pretty girls, I'd like to meet
the girls that [G] sweep on the five bob side [C] of the street.
[G]
[C] Now me mates all say to me, if it's girls [F] you wish to meet,
on an airman's [C] pay, you'll have to stay [D] on the shady side of the street.
Where it costs [C] half a crown for to have your [F] little treat.
It might be [C] nice, but it's twice the [G] price on the five bob side [C] of the street.
And [G] I'm walking up and down the streets of the town.
[C] And ladies [F] and girls, [F] pretty [C] girls, I'd like to meet
the girls that [G] sweep on the five bob side of [C] the street.
And now I'm twenty-one of girls I've had a score.
While some were old, had hats [D] of gold, but half a [G] crown no more.
And I still have [C] a dream to lie in [F] silken sheets
with a pretty [C] maid who plies her [G] trade on the five bob side [C] of the street.
And [G] I'm walking up and down the streets of the [C] town.
And ladies [F] and girls, pretty [C] girls, [F] I'd like to meet
[C] the girls that sweep on the five bob side of the [F] street.
[C]
[C] And now I'm twenty-two with five [F] bob here I'm stood.
[C] And I look across and the girls [D] look posh, I wonder if I [G] should.
But a man must [C] have a dream and I might [F] be let down.
So I'll stay right here [C] and I'll drink me beer [G] at two at half a crown.
And I'm walking up and down the streets of the [F] town.
And ladies and girls, pretty [C] girls, I'd like to meet
the girls that [G] sweep on the five bob side [C] of the street.
