[Bm] The 52 Song Project started in 2011 [B] with memorizing 52 [N] cover songs.
And it was just a way for me to kind of go back to school [B] and learn other songwriters'
chord progressions, their lyrics, just [D] their songs.
And I had never really, as a songwriter, I just [B] really had never spent much time learning
other people's music.
And so I [Gb] felt it was just, it was something that I needed [Eb] to do.
And then towards the end of that year in 2011, and it was, [Ab] I just posted the videos to YouTube,
[G] towards the end of the year, people started writing [Gbm] in saying, we're going to miss this weekly project.
[N] What's next?
And I knew that I wanted to focus back on my songwriting, and so it seemed kind of like
the next step that I should do.
And I was really nervous about announcing it, because when I say I'm going to do something,
I do [B] it.
But writing 52 songs seems a little crazy.
[Bb] And I'd never done that kind of writing before.
And so I put out a subscriber -based model that allowed me to take some [C] time off from
touring and [G] just stay home and focus on the songwriting.

I had a [B] set of rules for the project that I shared with the subscribers.
[Abm] And one of the rules [F] was that I would not care if they liked the song.
[E] And I think in doing that, [Bb] I gave myself full artistic freedom and creative [E] freedom.
And it could be any musical style, [G] any [Abm] genre, any song [B] subject, any instrument.
They weren't signing [N] up to get 52 awesome Victoria Vox songs.
It could be anything.
And I think just from having that freedom, there never was a formula for it.
And [B] I would challenge myself to be inspired by maybe picking up a different instrument.
Most of the time I wrote on the ukulele, I think all but [Eb] three, maybe four, were written
on the uke.
But the second [A] week, [F] a friend gave me [F] a giant thumb piano with butter knives.
And that's kind of what [N] inspired the ostinato riff that I now play on [B] ukulele.
But it's just that it comes from somewhere [G] else.
