Hello, Paul Hummler at Dream Guitars.
I had to force myself to stop smiling because this guitar is so good, so I could talk to y'all.
This is a Michael Greenfield.
It's virtually new.
It was built in the end of 2017, and it's got all the stuff I love.
[A]
First of all, [Abm] you can see it's a fan fret instrument, so it's about 25.4 up top and
26.25 on the bass, which is very much like my [Em] personal guitars.
I've decided on that sort of a [N] scale for my own use of many tunings.
This guitar, Michael considers it a dad-gad's guitar, but this scale is perfectly good for
C tunings as well, and of course, standard.
No problem at all going to standard on this guitar as well.
Fan fret, for those of you who aren't familiar, just means that there's two scales.
There's a bass scale and a treble scale, so the strings obviously are angled and the frets are angled.
You don't feel it at all when you play it.
I've found out many times I hand these guitars [Abm] to people in the shop, and if I don't tell
them and they don't look real hard, they just play.
So it's not a big deal as far as playing it, but you get some benefits, [Ab] mainly low tunings
because the strings are longer here and normal or shorter here.
This one's pretty normal up top.
So if you go to a tuning [F] like dad-gad, everything holds up and really [Abm] sounds full and substantial.
Even C tunings, just enough length in [Em] the string to hold up and not get floppy.
You also don't have to use very heavy strings.
You can use mediums or even lights on a guitar like [Bm] this.
And it's a little bit more in tune.
Intonation is a little bit better up and down the neck as well because straight [Eb] frets are
compromised [E] that are not perfect.
So there's all that about fan fret, and I'm a big fan of that.
No pun intended.
And then this guitar has got two other things that I love a lot.
One is [B] moon spruce.
This is alpine moon spruce on the top.
[Ab] And moon spruce, again, is [F] harvested when the [E] sap, the phase of the moon brings the
sap to the bottom of the tree so they can cut it and get pieces of wood that have less
sap in it so that it just vibrates more and it just works.
I've heard many, many guitars that are moon spruce and there's something special about it.
It's very expensive wood.
It's hard to get, and it's all for good reason.
The other things I really love about Michael's guitar is [A] his bevels.
So this has got two bevels, front and back, and the back one's big.
So it covers the whole chest, the whole upper body.
So it's a large guitar.
This is the G2 model.
And so when you're holding the guitar, everything that's touching your body is soft and [Ebm] beveled.
So very easy to hold this guitar for a long [A] time, even though it's fairly large.
It kind of feels like a Stratocaster.
I like it a lot.
Of course, nice [Abm] deep cutaways so you can play the whole guitar.
To me, this is the dusty end up here, as Martin [F] Simpson would say.
I don't get up there a whole lot, [Ab] but I do use a capo sometimes, so it's great to be
able to get up high.
[Eb] [D]
And then [Am] this one has Malaysian blackwood, which is just beautiful, beautiful wood.
And this particular set is stunning with this dramatic [Ab] light section in the center.
Michael bound it in ebony, so it's a very classy-looking [Am] guitar in every way.
And then it's got some neat markers on the front, [N] too, which you can look at the pictures for.
But the markers are here on the treble side, which is really nice.
And of course, it's got side dots as well.
And then his Elm, Spalted Elm Rosette, which is sort of Michael's trademark as well, as
far as visual goes.
This guitar, as I said earlier, I wasn't kidding.
I had to compose myself to start talking, because I played the intro, and it just blew my mind.
It's one of those [B] guitars, Greg just described it, you feel it blossom out into the room.
There's sort of this growing thing that takes over the whole [Ebm] space.
It's a big sounding guitar, very beautiful, lots of sustain, lots of [F] overtones.
It's [Ebm] lush.
It's my kind of guitar.
Great fingerstyle instrument, for sure, no matter what sort of style you're playing.
This has just got it.
So without further [F] ado, let's let it make [Bm] some noise for us.
