Hey, what's up?
This is Joel here at the Chicago Music Exchange, and today I'm showcasing for
you an absolutely incredible, one-of-a-kind 1968 Gibson ES-355.
Factory original gold
sparkle finish, live ebola tailpiece, ABR1 bridge, two patent number pickups, and the
neck pickup's head, it's cover changed, all original electronics and wiring, ebony board
with the large block inlays, and a bound headstock with a custom diamond inlay.
So what makes
this guitar so incredible and unique is the fact that it is a gold top ES, which was never
a production model.
This was ordered custom from the Gibson factory in 1968 by the original
owner.
As you can see, front, back, sides, all gold sparkle flake finish basically.
And
in the one little spot you can see over here, underneath the pickguard, which is non-original,
where you can see some oxidization has happened, and it's gone through the finish almost down
to the top of the guitar, and you can see green on the edges.
That's from the original
celluloid tortoise shell guard that was there before.
Highly chemically reacting material,
highly flammable, and when kept in a case for long periods of time, it reacts with the
finish and with any of the hardware nearby.
So this pickup cover and the neck pickup was
also replaced at one point because it was so rusted because of the pickguard, and that's
why there is the wear through the finish right there too.
Other than that though, this is
an all original piece, absolute one of a kind.
You will never see another gold top ES-355
from the pre-Norland era.
So we're going to play this for you today through a 1967 black
bass VibroLux.
Pretty classic Fender clean amp, a little bit of reverb.
We'll turn this
thing up and see how it sounds.
