Hello everyone, my name is Victoria and I'm going to show you how to play a beautiful
tune called The Wind by Cat Stevens.
Now, The Wind is a relatively easy song to play.
It's only got four chords, but some of you might find the fingerpicking a little bit
challenging, so why don't we listen to the song once and then when I'm finished we can
talk about it, okay?
Okay, then this is The Wind by Cat Stevens.
[Ab] [Ab]
I [Dbm] listen to the wind, to [Ab] the wind of my soul.
Where I'll end [Dbm] up, well I think only [Ab] God really
knows.
[Bbm]
[Db] I've sat upon the [Ab] setting sun,
[Bbm] but never,
never, [Db] never.
[Eb] [Bbm] [Db] I never wanted [Eb] love to [Ab] once, [Bbm] no [Db] never, never.
[Ab] [Ab]
I listen [Db] to my words, but they [Eb] fall [Ab] far below.
I let [Db] my music take me where my heart wants to go.
[Bbm] [Db] I've swam upon the [Ab] devil's lake, [Db] but never did, but never, never.
[Bbm] [Db] I'll never make the same [Ab]
mistake, [Db] no never, [Eb] never, [Ab] never.
[Ab]
[Abm] So you see, that's Cat Stevens' [Eb] The Wind.
It's only got four chords, but like I said,
the fingerpicking might be a little bit difficult for some of you, and what I like to suggest
to my students is that you break the song down into manageable segments.
That is, learn
the first three seconds and learn them well, and then learn the other three seconds and
then the following three seconds, and then string those pieces together, okay?
And really
take your time at it.
It's really kind of fun learning this pick because it's kind of
like a mandolin.
So when you start [Ab] off with the D chord, see if you can see the fingerpicking
there.
I think I'm getting some reflection from the window, so let's see if this works.
What you're doing, you're doing the D chord, and you're doing this alternating thumb pick.
On the D chord it's between the fourth and the third string.
On the [Db] G chord it's between
the sixth and the fourth.
On the [Eb] A it's between the fifth and the fourth.
And [F] the E minor
is [Bb] the sixth.
[Eb] So you just have to coordinate that [Ab] bass, that alternating bass line with
the fingerpicking, which I usually do on the first and second string.
You can think of
another way to do it if you like.
So that's how you want to start.
Just start off learning
this part, like
[Db] the G.
I happen to have the ring finger there on that string [Abm] because when
I go into the A I do that little [Eb] embellishment, [Ab] and then back to the D which keeps my finger
in the [Db] same place.
Same thing with the G.
Just sounds pretty cool.
[Ab] [Db]
[Db]
[Ab]
So yeah, so you've
got that alternating thumb beat.
Practice with that.
See I'm alternating with the higher
strings.
[Db] Same thing with the G.
[Eb] [Ab]
It helps a lot if you have [N] the CD or you have it on iTunes
and you can listen to the song a few times just to see what Cass Stevens is doing.
I
don't do the exact same version.
I kind of do my version, but I think it sounds really
pretty.
So yeah, try practicing that like an hour a day.
I think an hour a day is a
good long time to be able to spend on this.
And I'm discouraged if you don't get it in
the beginning.
You know, really practice makes perfect in this.
Another thing is you don't
need to use the capo.
I just use it because my voice is higher.
If I go without it would
probably be too low.
Use a capo, don't use a capo.
You just do what you like, okay?
Anyway,
this is my first video for teaching guitar, but I'd like to teach other ones when I make
others.
Anyway, my name is Victoria and that was The Wind by Cass Stevens and I hope I
see you again soon.
Okay, take care.
