Hi, I'm Moby and for the last year or two I've been making a lot of
Videos about how some of my songs came to be how they were [B] recorded how the different instruments were recorded
But I realized I've never actually
talked [F#] about
the music
Itself on a very technical level like what are the chords?
What are the notes?
And so I wanted to [B] make this quick little video.
[F#] I guess it's sort of a how to play
one of my songs for anyone who's interested in
Learning.
I mean, I know it sounds presumptuous
Saying me assuming that anyone would want to learn how [B] to play
[F#] these songs, but in any case
[B] If it's presumptuous mea culpa, I apologize.
So the song I wanted to do
This this how-to is the great [F#] escape and
the great escape [B] was originally on the album [F#] 18 and
it was just this very
simple song that I did with a two women who were in a band called as your ray and
[B] [B] When I was working on [F#] the new album reprise, of course, [C#] I wanted [F#] to
Redo it because it was one of my favorite songs even if you know, there are no drums
there's nothing in it that was a hit, but it's just this plaintive delicate beautiful [B] song and
So here's how you would play it if you wanted to play it the verses
[E] I mean really I guess there's only two parts of the song there the verses [B] and the choruses
So the verses are a simple descending line from [F#] C major
to B minor
to G and the B [B] minor is technically part of the G
Chord voicing so and then it and then it goes
C major B minor up to D minor then back down to G.
So here's me [F#] playing
That spaghetti I just [C#m] described on acoustic guitar.
[C]
[G]
[C] [D]
[C] [G]
[F#] So it might have sounded a lot more complicated
When I was describing it talking about B minor also being part of the [B] chord voicing for G major
[Bm] I don't want to complicate things.
Let's just [F#] say CBG CBD and
the [B] D minor is D.
So that's how you play
the verses and the string arrangement
Largely [E] just follows that like I didn't [F#] want to have an overly complicated string arrangement
So I had these cello parts sort [B] of descending along with the root notes
So [G]
[C] [B] [G]
[C] [D]
[C] [B] [G]
[B] it's possible that I've lost
Anyone who might have been watching?
because
I'm taking something that's a very simple song and I'm possibly over complicating it
[F#] So the the chorus if that's what we want to call it goes from G [B] major
[C#] Down to E minor back up to C major
[B] back down to G major
E minor and then back up to C major where it sort of
[F#] rejoins
the verses [B] so here's me playing the chorus on acoustic guitar [G]
[Em]
[C]
[G]
[Em]
[C]
and [G] again if you feel like
elaborating on the string arrangement [B] if you want to make your own version by all means do so because I let the strings be very
Rudimentary I mean the song has this sort of like [F#] austere
Almost at times disconcerting [C#m] plaintive
[Bm] quality and I wanted the orchestral arrangement to reflect [F#] that [Em]
[E] [C]
[F#]
[Em] [E]
[C]
[B] [G]
[E] and then of course [B] on the version on [F#m] reprise we have the
phenomenal vocals [B] of Natalie Dawn
Alice Skye and Luna Lee and even though they're not here just because their voices sound so great.
Let's just listen to them
[G]
Oh
Just to watch you perform the greatest
So
[F#] hopefully that wasn't too confusing or pedantic
[F#] But that's how you would play the great escape
There aren't any drum [B] parts.
There isn't really a bass part if you don't want to count cello as bass, so
[B]
It's very [F#] simple.
It's very straightforward and hopefully this has been
interesting and
Illustrative keeping in mind.
I don't fully know what the word illustrative [F#] means.
So if I used it wrong by all [B] means you should feel
Superior to me probably feel superior to me in lots of ways
But that's just yet another way to feel superior to me because I use the word illustrative wrong if I used it, right
I'll try not to be [G] smug
[F#] [Em]
How long can [C] you hold your breath
[G] While you hold mine
[G] I'll count [Em] in the way
[C] Just to watch you perform the [Em] greatest [G] escape
[F#] [G]
