[D] [G]
[Em] This [D] is how to play the [Gm] fingerstyle intro from the song Shallow [C] by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper.
[G] We're going to be really [D] working through it and [Em] covering it, so if you're struggling [D] with any other [Gm] tutorials you might see,
or you [C] feel like you have no talent for fingerstyle, please [G] stick around.
I've got some [D] exercises and I've got a [E] couple of things that we're going to be [D] working through to [G] get you playing this song in no time.
But let's have a close-up here now.
[E] [Gm]
[D] [G]
[C]
[G] [D]
[Em] [Gm] [D] [G]
So the [Em] chords that I'm playing are an E minor 7 without the little finger.
So just 1, 2 and 3.
First finger moves up a string, middle finger [F#] moves down to play the D slash F sharp.
There are other ways to play that chord, but that's the [G] one we're going for here.
And then to the G without the little finger, though if you do pluck that thinnest string, that's what we're going to be going for,
but you know, that's an option.
[Em]
[D] 1, [G] 2, 3.
C played in the standard fashion, add the ad-9 [C] with the little finger.
[G]
G played with all fingers, 1, 2, 3, 4.
And then [D] a standard D, which we'll end up [A] doing the hammer-on flick-off,
[E] all on the thinnest string with that middle finger.
Pluck, [F#m] open, [E] pick, flick-off.
That's a [A] little [Em] thing to be thinking [Am] about.
And we want to set up our fingers in the orthodox style of having our first three fingers
assigned to the thinnest three strings throughout.
The thumb will go between any of the thicker [E] three strings,
and this was taught to me as the orthodox style,
which is something that I cover in my Fuller Fingerstyle course,
and the link to that is just here.
The first bar goes like this.
[Em] [D] [G]
This is in accordance with the tab, the link to which is in the description.
[E] The thumb playing the thickest string twice,
while the E minor chord is pressed down,
and the middle finger second [D] string to [G] first finger on the third [Em] string.
Thumb, thumb, middle finger, first finger.
Thumb on the second [F#] chord, pluck [D] together, first two fingers,
and [G] then all together on the G.
We're halfway through if you can [E] get that far.
[Em]
[D] [G] That part [E] is fairly simple,
[Gm] [D]
[G] and that's how you'll see it played on the other videos that I've checked out [Em] at least anyway,
just to see what [D] other people are doing, [G] or any common mistakes,
but everyone seems to get that correct.
[C] This next bit people seem to get flummoxed by, and I can see why.
It's a different pattern for each chord here.
So on the normal C chord, thumb on string five,
thumb to first finger, to middle finger,
[Gm] the little finger goes down on the C at [C] nine.
[G] [C]
One, two, [G] three, four
First finger, [C] thumb,
then a string, [G] second string.
[C]
[G] [C]
[G] [C]
[G] [C] [G]
Remember you can slow this video down by the great feature [C] on YouTube if you do need it, super slow.
[G] [C]
[G] And then I would use probably this G.
You might see me doing this quite a bit, but you have the option to use this one or this one,
depends which sounds better to you.
For the final bar of the intro,
or the bit that doesn't repeat anyway,
thumb [D] pluck, and then D, [G]
[D]
hammer-on [G] section.
[D] [G] Hammer-on, flick off, [D]
[Em] and then it's a repetition of the first bar.
[D] [G]
Beautiful, beautiful riff.
This riff is varied throughout the rest of the song,
and it's not played in uniform at all, really, from here on out,
but that first [E] section, that introduction, is so clear and it should be what you focus on.
[Em]
[D] [G]
[C]
[G] [D]
[Em] [D] [G]
I think the G to D, which I'm playing like this, this G,
I kind of call it the finger-style G,
because we can play melodies with it,
I think that's my personal preference.
I think it might be this one, [D] the more [C] uniform one.
So after,
[G] [D] it might be that one, but my [G] personal preference is for this one.
And if you've never checked out this way of playing the G yet,
we do it in my little course called Rudiments of Finger-Style,
which is just here, that would be another thing to really check out.
[C] [G] That
[C] [G] would be an ideal warm-up for this kind of thing,
to get you up to a level [E]
[Gm] [D] [G] where you can play this sort of thing quite [C] easily.
[G] [D] [Em]
[D] [G] But it certainly takes a little bit of practice from there.
In essence, that would take us up to the chorus,
which would, just as a recap, so you don't have to check out my other tutorial if you don't need to,
[Am] we have the A minor, and everything here would just be strummed.
A minor, [D] D slash F sharp,
[G] I'll never [D] meet the [Em] ground.
This is from a [Am] minute and a half through the song, or something [D] like that.
And I'd just be strumming it [G] with the first finger or the first three-finger nails.
[D] [Em]
But you guys know that, because you can do finger-style if you've got this far in this tutorial.
And then the bridge, [Bm] E minor, B minor,
which you'd probably want to be playing with a bar at [D] this kind of level.
D [A] major, and A major, which is a bit of an odd chord in this key.
It goes back to A minor on.
But you can see the chord sheet [E] in the description of this video,
and that is how to play this riff.
Thank you [D] so much for watching.
[G] I hope that's something that you could do.
If you need more [C] help and guidance with learning finger [G]-style,
and mastering these kind of songs, [D] check out a couple of links to my [Em] website,
where we have a free [D] finger-style taster, [G]

[Em] _ _ _ [D] _ _ [G] _ _ _
I think the G to D, which I'm playing like this, this G,
_ I kind of call it the finger-style G,
_ _ _ because we can play melodies with it,
I think that's my personal preference.
I think it might be this one, _ [D] _ the more [C] uniform one.
So after, _ _ _ _ _
_ [G] _ _ [D] _ _ it might be that one, but my [G] personal preference is for this one.
And if you've never checked out this _ _ way of playing the G yet,
we do it in my little course called Rudiments of Finger-Style,
which is just here, that would be another thing to really check out.
_ [C] _ [G] That _ _ _
[C] _ [G] _ would be an ideal warm-up for this kind of thing,
to get you up to a level [E] _ _ _
_ [Gm] _ _ [D] [G] where you can play this sort of thing _ quite [C] easily. _ _ _ _
_ [G] _ _ [D] _ _ _ _ [Em] _
_ _ [D] _ [G] _ _ But it certainly takes a little bit of practice from there.
In essence, that would take us up to the chorus,
which would, just as a recap, so you don't have to check out my other tutorial if you don't need to,
[Am] we have the A minor, and everything here would just be strummed.
A minor, _ _ [D] D slash F sharp,
_ [G] I'll never [D] meet the [Em] _ ground.
This is from a [Am] minute and a half through the song, or something [D] like that.
And I'd just be strumming it [G] with the first finger or the first _ three-finger nails.
_ [D] _ _ _ [Em] _
_ _ _ But you guys know that, because you can do finger-style if you've got this far in this tutorial.
And then the bridge, [Bm] E minor, B minor,
which you'd probably want to be playing with a bar at [D] this kind of level. _
D [A] major, and A major, which is a bit of an odd chord in this key.
It goes back to A minor on.
But you can see the chord sheet [E] in the description of this video,
and that is how to play this riff.
Thank you [D] so much for watching.
[G] I hope that's something that you could do.
If you need more [C] help and guidance with learning finger [G]-style,
and mastering these kind of songs, [D] check out a couple of links to my [Em] website,
where we have a free [D] finger-style taster, [G]
and then a fuller, wider, bigger finger [C]-style course
that will really help [G] you nail playing [D] guitar without a pick,
and gain [Em] some real confidence with [D] songs like this.
[Gm] Hope you check out those videos.
Subscribe if [Cm] you like what I do,
and I [G] hope to see you again in another video.
