[G] [Dm]
[Am] [D] [Bm]
[Am] Then outside, [C]
you invited [F] in, that I couldn't abide.
[G] Wouldn't miss it [C] again, [Dm]
burning every bridge that I crossed.
To find some beautiful place [G] to get lost.
[Am] Had true [C] love, made it die.
[F] I pushed her away.
[G] She said, please [D] stay.
[Dm] Burning every bridge [G] that I crossed.
[Dm] To find some beautiful place to [G] get lost.
So it's [B] October the 10th, 2011, [Gb] and we're here in Concord, North Carolina,
where
[D] Jessica Lee Mayfield and I are [Gb] [A] starting on this project that we've [Eb] had in mind for a few months,
[D] which is to basically record [G] a [Am] collection of Elliot Smith songs.
[Em] I think for Jessica [C] and I, it's just a [Bm] question of loving the songs and just genuinely [E] loving singing them.
[Dm] They're so good that [G] [N] there's just a joy to singing [G] them.
Even if the topics are dark sometimes, there's still a joy to singing them.
So the point [B] of us doing it, I think, is just to be taking [F] part in an artistic venture that [G] is just fun and feels right, [Dm] feels natural.
[F] [A] Well, [G] [Dm]
[Bm] [B] there are times that I can't listen to Elliot [Bm] Smith at all.
It's all or nothing.
It's not like he becomes part of a rotation.
It's [B] like I'm listening to [B] the works of Elliot Smith or I'm listening to everything else that I listen [Bm] to.
I guess because a lot of [Eb] anyone who's an Elliot [E] Smith fan takes the lyrics and [Bm] relates them to themselves.
Being such a personal artist and everyone taking the songs and when they listen to them and making them their own,
I feel like that's kind of what we're doing, too.
I feel like when Seth's singing them, I forget for a moment that they're Elliot Smith songs.
When I'm [Ab] singing them, it's the same thing.
Suddenly [Bm] I'm singing the lyrics as if it were my own song.
So it's a little different in this scenario.
[Ab] [Eb] [Bm]
[D] [Em] [Bm]

[Bm] [Db] [G]
[A] [Bm]
[Db] [G] [A]
May we [Bm] put up [Db] a band, you [G] think?
[Em]
[Bm] I [D] wanna [Em] hurt him, I [D] wanna give him [E] pain.
[Bm] I'm a rolling [Em] candle, [Bm] my head [D] is full [Em] of flame.
I'm really excited about it.
[G] It's very different than anything I've ever done just [Bm] for the nature of it being a cover [Bbm] record.
I feel good about it because it came about so [Bm] naturally and there wasn't nothing [Bbm] insincere about [Bm] it.
It only exists because me and Jessica love Elliot Smith's songs.
[Db]
I've been [Gb] working on it for the last almost three years.
[G]
I've been working at my home, working in Jessica's home, working in hotel rooms around the world.
I worked [Bm] on the song Pitsila for a few hours in a hotel room in Munich.
A lot of effort had to be put in to make it happen just because [Em] we're real busy.
I think it speaks to [G] the importance of the project to both of us that we [Bm] made the time to get it done.
And how much we care about it.
[Ab] It's a Frankenstein of [G] a project [Bm]
made up of a lot of [Em] different sessions and a lot of different locations.
