My own personal Jesus.
[Am] [F#] Probably [A] the most oddball [E] cover tune on this record is [F#] Personal Jesus [E] because everybody's going what?
Sammy Hagar's doing a Depeche Mode tune.
It really came together in a completely organic way.
I called Chad Smith, Michael Anthony, flew them up to San Francisco to record One Day With Me.
Sammy [G] could give me a couple days [D] notice next time before he called me.
He called [F#m] me on Sunday.
I'm like [E] hanging out at home watching TV, relaxing.
He's like, come down here man, you gotta come down and [F#m] play.
So I did.
But I guess that's, [D] you know, sometimes the best [A] stuff is when you're [G#] not planning something,
[F#m] you're not thinking so much.
The old blues saying, if you're thinking too much, you're stinking.
As I was driving to the [E] studio, I hear Personal Jesus by Depeche [A] Mode on the radio.
I'm going, oh, what [E] a bad ass song.
[B] I forgot.
I love this song.
So I'm going, I'm going to record this [E] today, man.
I want to work up a real rockin' version of this.
I mean, their version rocked too, but it was all electronic.
So I thought, you know, it might sound cool.
So I [A] stopped by Bananas at Large, [E] picked up a head, borrowed a [B] 50 watt Marshall, brought
a guitar, and plugged in.
[G#] And [A] myself, Sam, Mike, and Chad just went at it.
We downloaded it, listened [G#] to it one time, [D] and started jamming it.
[F#m] And it was [A] rockin'.
Johnny Cash did an [G#] acoustic version of Personal [F#m] Jesus.
It was a bit of a crazy half hour of the band mixing the Depeche Mode version and the Johnny
[F#] Cash version together and mashing [Bm] it up.
Now, in the meantime, [A] I'm running around [G#] setting up [F#m] microphones, getting ready to do the recording
session when I was told, hey, did you get that?
And I said I did, because I [Bm] record everything.
And [A] they said, [G#] we're done.
[C#] And that's how Personal [F#] Jesus was recorded.
[D] And for [Gm] me, it's just like an unconditional love song.
[F#] It's a pledge of love to your partner, your mate.
[F#m] We just jammed this song for about two hours, cut it up.
I laid it down with a very clean guitar.
And it sounded cool, man.
I was doing some [B] very clean [A] bluesy [F#m] stuff in the front, which was really different.
Everybody seemed to dig that.
It sounded so spiritual to me [E] that I wanted to get these background singers.
So I called up Michael [Bm] Nardawaldin, and I said, you must [A] have some gospel [G#] singers somewhere
[F#m] in your pocket.
Oh, yeah, I know these two girls, this guy out of Oakland.
And I got them to sing the backgrounds.
And I arranged it with them.
And we took it to church, man.
This thing is a religious [Bm] experience.
Like it should [A] be.
Neil Schon [G#m] eventually [F#m] provided me with more guitar tracks.
Sammy said, would you like to go over there just yourself and work on the track and build
it up a bit?
I thought it turned [Bm] out really great, man.
I just redid [A] pretty much [G#m] everything.
I [F#m] redid the rhythm guitar, lead guitar.
[A] I just built the track.
[G#] And I got to say, [F#m] Neil, it took me three days to sort through those [A] 40 tracks.
[D#] But we love [C#] what you did.
[F#m] It's awesome.
I was [E] surprised to hear so many [A] voices on it in the end.
But I [G#] think the track sounds [E] really cool.
[F#m] Great rendition of it.
With Johnny Cash in his [A] last years, Rick Rubin did [G#] a few CDs [Gm] with him that are really [E] cool.
Chad remembered that, and he was sitting with Rick Rubin when I sent him our version.
And I said, ask Rick what he thinks [Gm] of it.
I emailed it to him, and he got back and said, Rick said, it's awesome. I'm smiling.
