Hi, I'm Steve Bofman with Acoustic Guitar.
Welcome to Near My God To Thee, one of the
greatest hymns of all time.
This entered popular culture with the sinking of the Titanic when
rumor had it that they sang this on the way down.
It's probably true, no one knows for
sure.
What is for certain is that it just makes a great fingerstyle guitar arrangement.
As I would like to demonstrate for you soon, we're in double drop D.
I'm going to play two different arrangements of it here for you.
The first one is a slow, somber,
quasi-Celtic fingerstyle version that I think captures the original sentiment of the songwriters.
Strength in the face of death, joy, but also a somberness recognition that your life is about
to be over.
I think I captured that in the first slow version here.
Then I do a ragtime boogie
woogie version that is very far from the original intent of the hymn writers, but it's a really,
really fun double thumb kind of Chet Atkins style thing.
One word of advice, if you're playing this
song at a funeral, I recommend you skip the boogie woogie part, no matter how badly you're itching
to play it.
Let me demonstrate them both for you now.
Near My God to Thee.
First of all,
slow and somber.
Second of all, getting down boogie woogie style.
Here we go.
