Hi, I'm Barry Birmingham and welcome to Freedrumlessonsonline.com.
Hey, we've been putting together some really cool tunes and applying some simple grooves [E] to them.
[A] And the song I'm thinking about today is Lights by Journey.
This is a really cool tune and I love playing this tune.
[C] Basically it's in six and it's like a slow blues.
So we're going to play six on our [N] hi-hat and four on the snare drum.
[B] One, two, three, four, five, six.
One, two, three, four, five, six.
One, two, three, four, five, six.
And then we're going to play the one and the six on the kick drum.
And that'll sound like this.
Now here comes the breaks.
All the breaks are in triplet form.
And when I say triplets, meaning it's this kind of a feel.
One, two, [F#] three, four, five, six.
One, two, three, four, five, six.
So all triplets.
[C] So the first break after the guitar riff is this.
Here it is again.
[B] And then [G#] before the chorus and after the chorus [E] it's going to do this.
Where [C] you play like this.
[B] [D]
[B] [D]
And then on the chorus and the lead solo it's like a [C#] syncopated triplet.
And it'll play like this.
[C] So kind of slow.
Like it almost sounds like you're dragging but you're not.
So what I would suggest is maybe listen to it a couple times before trying to play it.
Kind of watch what I'm doing and then follow along.
All right, enjoy.
[A] [Bm]
[A] [Bm]
[C] [D]
And the lights [B] go [Bm] down in [C] the city.
[D] And the sun [Bm] shines on [C] the bay.
[D] I want to be [Bm] there [C] in my detail.
Oh, [Bm] I want [C]
[E] [D]
[Bm] to show you [C] your lonely.
[D] When [Bm] my bed is [C] lonely.
[D] I want [Bm] to get back to my [C] city.
[Bm] Oh, [C]

[Bm] I [G]
[D] don't want to be a boy [Bm] without [G] you.

[C]
[D] Oh, I [Bm] want to show you your lonely.

So there you have it.
A very cool tune and a really simple groove to play along with it.
