🎹 THE "BUTCH SLIDE" GOSPEL TECHNIQUE chords
Start Jamming...
Okay, I want to teach you something.
I call it the butch slide because I took it from butch Hayward and
This is this just kind of really
Revolutionized my playing once I really got it underneath my finger.
So basically we're gonna take it in the key.
Oh
A flat, but it's good to have in really all 12 keys because I really I use it everywhere
So all we're gonna do is we're gonna take a flat.
I'll tell you that first inversion
And what we're gonna do is about how much show you the slide first then I'm gonna break it down
[Ab] [Bbm] [G] [Ab]
So yeah, see if I a flat
[Bbm]
D flat F B flat [G] we're gonna go to a G chords
D G B
And we're gonna [Ab] go to a
flat a flat C
Okay, so don't just learn the notes.
Look at the pattern.
We're going one major
[Bbm] To minor we're [Db] going to a [G] seven major
[Ab] to a one
So you don't just want to learn it the way I taught it you want to learn the inversions
Let me slowly go through the inversion.
So
[Bbm] [G]
[Ab] [Bbm] [G] [Ab]
[Bbm] [G] [Ab]
I'll do it real slow
[Bbm] [G]
[Ab] Go to the next [Bbm] inversion
Same B flat minor chord just different sequence of [G] notes
[Ab] next [Bbm] inversion
[G] Then [Ab] we're back
[N] now
Now that is powerful because what it does is it's going to give you for lack of a better word
Content that you can use in songs.
It's gonna give you
Improvisational technique if you if you learn it, you know, get it underneath your finger.
You can improv with it
You can use [Ab] it to fill space
So when I say content, I mean all of that if you want to fill space if you want to improv
If you want to use something melodically, let me show you a practical application for something like this if I'm playing
Oh, I love Jesus
[G] [Bbm]
[Ab] So I just play
There is a name.
I love to hear and I'm I don't know if the melody is exact but that works
Okay, so I did
[Bbm] there
[Ab]
with there is
[Bbm] [Ab] [G]
[Bbm] [Ab] Using the same course from the slide
[Bbm] [Ab]
[G] [Bbm] [Ab]
[G] [Bbm]
[Ab] [Db] [Bb] [Ab]
Okay, so that's a real practical way a practical approach to it I use on Amazing Grace and
[G] [Ab]
I want you to pay attention because that's something you hear in gospel a lot
And [G] all I'm [Bbm] using is the [Ab] notes is the chorus from that slide.
Um, and really that time I'm just going down chromatically
[Bbm] [Ab] Okay
So it has a very practical approach
Let's say I'm just playing something like I mean, let me show it to you from a improvisational perspective
I might be playing talk music
[Ebm] [A] [Db]
You know or I can do [Ab] something like me say
There it goes
[Ebm]
[A] [Db] [B]
And all I'm doing is I was just in my left hand I was going [Cm] let me see [Bb] six
two
[Ebm] [Ab]
five [Db] one
four
All [Ab] right.
So let me probably help if I switch hands.
So [Bb] six
two
[Ebm] [Gb] five one
[Db]
four [Ab] so my left hand I'm going [G] six [Gb] two
[C] [Db]
And my right hand I can [Ab] do
[G] [Ebm] [A]
[Db]
But once I get to the four I can actually I'm I can play [Fm] the four [Db] major or I can play it dominant
And that's how I was playing it dominant going.
It's a more of a like of a churchy vibe
But that's something you can work on you [Ab] just go
Let me give you that left hand
[G] I
[Gb]
[F] [Gb] [F] [Gb]
Mean let me slow that one down so you can see that that B flat and the [F] D flat.
I'm a lord of down half steps
Keeping the G flat [Gb] enough
[F]
Then I'm going
[Db] either that major seven or the dominant seven would be to be and
[Ab] Here, I'm not doing any rhyme or reason.
I'm just playing what I feel
[G]
[Ebm] [A]
[Db] You know them once I get to that four I can you know, I can like play around with it.
[Eb] You kind of do some
[Fm] Kind [Ab] of do some stuff like that, but
That's very very very
Useful and it's in so many places.
I use it in
That was just a that was just an improvisational approach.
I showed you
amazing grace
I use it
To fill you know space and I kind of demonstrated that but let me just do it in the song
So you see you can see it even better.
Let me let me go back to Ohio.
Love Jesus
[Eb]
[Ab] [C] [Fm]
[Ab] [Bb]
[Eb] [G] [Ab]
[Bbm] [Ab] See that
[Eb]
That's the same thing.
I'm playing it in the key of E flat and I actually broke that when I did you showed you some
some techniques on the five
[Ab] [Eb]
[Ab] So see how that
[G] [Ab] [C] [Fm] [Ab]
[Bb]
[Ab] [Dm] [Eb]
[Ab] [C] [N]
